Kjell Grant - Design Director
Kjell Grant is an internationally established designer with products marketed in Japan , USA and Europe as well as in Australia . Born in Scotland , he completed his formal education at Stirling University , where he attained an MA degree in Fine Arts, followed by a Diploma in sculpture at Royal College of Art in London. He studied architecture and industrial design in Chicago , attaining his Bachelor of Architecture and MA in Industrial Design at Illinois Institute of Technology. Following his graduation in 1953, he was employed by Raymond Loewy in New York and designed the Crista porcelain collection for Rosenthal , Germany .
Kjell Grant arrived in Australia in 1957 and developed Formplan Design Group, designing furniture and commercial interiors. The client list includes , Knoll Planning Unit, Ford Motor Company, Shell, BHP, Mitsubishi and Toyota . The Montreal chair, designed by Grant for the Montreal Expo 1967 and Osaka 69 is in the permanent collection of MOMA New York.
Auditoria became a major design area and projects included Adelaide Festival Theatre, His Majesty's Perth , Theatre Royal and Seymour Centre, Sydney and the Arts Centre, Melbourne , including The Concert Hall, State and Playhouse Theatres.
In 1995 Kjell Grant joined the staff of RMIT University and conducted Design Studies and the Furniture Studio for final year students in Industrial Design. In 1999 Grant founded Melbourne Movement, a collective of young design graduates, whose work of excellence is taken to the world forum, by exhibitions at the Salone Satellite at Fiera Milano, Tokyo and Singapore , as well as in Australia . |
